Let's hammer it out!

I have been obsessed with the look of hammered metal for years!  It's not yet a problem.  Don't worry!  My house is not full of it.  I have a small collection of bowls, frames and my everyday silverware.  However, there are many hammered metal objects I desire that will be purchased soon!

Look at home beautiful it makes a garbage bin and tissue box look?

Here it is from West Elm - serving trays, water jug, bowl and vase.

It makes for a beautiful set of cookware.

Who wouldn't want a hammered metal under-mount sink??  It's definitely on my list of favourite uses.

This silverware set is similar to mine but not as pretty.  Mine are very shiny!  I would die if one of them was lost because I cannot remember the brand name and I haven't been able to find them again.  They were a gift by my Aunt Julia (who has the same set).  I believe they are from HomeSense.  Keep your eyes out for them and let me know if you ever spot them.

I've been in search of two table lamps for my console table.  This would look gorgeous in my living room but it's slightly more than I can pay right now.  I will definitely keep them in mind for future use.

Do you have any hammered metal objects at home?  Do you look this look as much as I do?

Have a great day!!

Sex & The City2

Filming has begun on the second Sex and The City movie.  I'm super excited!!  I don't know much about it yet.  I have heard through this website that Carrie and Big might be moving to London or to Dubai.  I adore London (having lived there myself) but I'm not sure Dubai works for me.  We'll see what happens...

I LOVED the first movie!! Everything from the script, set and costumes.  It was perfect.  I could not stop laughing at the scene in Mexico when Charlotte 'poughkeepsed in her pants'.  Too funny!  I also fell for the famous blue Manolo Blahnik shoes.

Are they not the most gorgeous pair of shoes you have ever set your eyes on?  I stalked them for a while at Holt Renfrew but couldn't part with more than $1,000 to take them home.  However, they did inspire the shoes I wore on my wedding day.

Not bad, eh! :)

Here are a few scenes from the new movie.  Doesn't Carrie look fabulous and young!  I can't wait to watch it to see what everyone is wearing and what their homes look like.

The best family rooms

I spent Saturday with my family at the Toronto Air Show.  It was a GREAT day!!  We hung out all afternoon in the sun, relaxed at my place and then enjoyed a delicious dinner.  So all of this family time had me reviewing what I dream of in my future family room.  Here are a few selections of my favourites!

Designer Jacqueline Derrey Segura hit this one out of the park.  I love the neutral warm earthy feel of this family room.

Designers Barbara Westbrook and Kim Winkler tied the kitchen and family room in perfectly.  They both have a rustic yet contemporary look.  I love the wooden beams and hit of colour with the purple throw!  I could easily relax here on a Saturday afternoon with a good read.

I love the symetry in this room by Jamie Creel and Marco Scarani. It's very soothing.

Same room.  Different view.  I like the golden hue of the floor, cabinet, painting, chair, coffee and side tables, and the mirror above the fireplace.  It brightens up the space.  The vertical lines of the mirror, painting and wallpaper emphasize the height of this room.

This room by Candice Olsen is bright and contemporary.  I love the blue and white pallette against the dark wood wall.  The use of beveled glass opens up the space.  This is another favourite of mine.  I would probably use this as a living room instead of a family room.

That's all for now.  I hope you're all having a great Labour Day! Back to work tomorrow. :( Feel free to leave a comment below.  I would love feedback on any of the posts.

Baby on the brain

I have babies on my brain today.  Well, maybe I should be more specific; I have baby nurseries on my brain.  Don't worry hun, I don't want to have a baby today!!  Someday, yes! :)

I have noticed a surge in interest for decorating the nursery as carefully as the rest of the house. Those little eyes need stimulation.  I think that's what the following nurseries do very well.  It's also important for mom and dad to feel comfortable and love these rooms as well since they spend ALOT of time in here during the first few months.

I love the bright blue walls of this nursery and the vines on the wall against the crisp white crib and change table.

I adore the large lettering on the wall, the rug and the espresso coloured furniture against the cool blue paint.  One of my favourite colour combinations is blue and brown.

This is Jenna Lyons (J Crew creative director) nursery.  I love the wallpapered ceiling against the black wall.  I've seen this yellow and white stripe design in many photos lately.  I must find the name.  A very contemporary nursery!

The nursery below is by Wendy Bellissimo for Kelly Rippa's daughter Lola.  I love the mural on the wall!  It's such a classic image.  I wish the ceiling were painted a light blue.  I think it would have pulled the look together a bit further.  But seriously, who am I to judge the designs of Wendy. She has been doing this much longer than me.

This has to be the most beautiful nursery I have ever set my eyes upon.  It's GORGEOUS!!!  What else would I expect of Jennifer Lopez!

This room is modern girlie.  I love the grey paint with pink details against the crisp white furniture.  The black and white Chinoiserie fabric and the white chair and ottoman with black piping is fresh.

Another gorgeous grey nursery with what looks like lilac accents.  LOVE!!

On another note, it's FRIDAY and the LAST LONG WEEKEND OF THE SUMMER!!  ENJOY FOLKS!

Alicia Bock

Alicia Bock's is a very talented photographer. Her images evoke memories of the past.  The way life might have been in the 50's... or at least that's where it brings me back. (I realize I have no memories of that era since I was born in '79 but it's where my mind goes... so don't take me so literally!)  They also remind me of photos of my mom's childhood in Scotland.  I lover her use of blue and how she captures the light.  Each photo makes me feel calm, relaxed and happy, especially the blue skies.  I love her work!!

You can purchase the photos in any size on Etsy. She also offers the iamges on canvas or greeting cards.

Dinnerware

Interior style does not end at the furnishings and accessories in your home or the colour on your walls.  Every detail in your home counts!  A beautiful room should consists of everything from the dinning table you choose to the dinnerware and silverware.

One of the most exciting activities of planning my wedding was choosing our china. I know it's not every girls dream but for me it was perfect!  I went with my aunt Julia.  We spent hours looking at hundreds of patterns and finally choose this beauty set by Vera Wang for Wedgwood.  I love the delicate gold leaf design! I believe it will never go out of style and I’ll be able to mix and match different colours and patterns with it.

I choose the Maxfiled silverware from PotteryBarn.  It looks absolutely perfect with my china.  Yes, I'm calling it mine because Ryan could care less.  While contemplating which china to register for I would ask him his opinion.  His response, 'whatever you like'.  :)

I also chose these beautiful tulip shaped stemware from William Sonoma.

I will use the linen hemstitch napkins from PotteryBarn in white.

Now I just need to purchase this dining table...

and 8 of these chairs.

Then, all I will have to do is pick out the paint colour or wallpaper, a rug,  chandelier, serving hutch and while I'm at it, maybe a house and win the lotto!! :) I'll have to take it one step at a time even though I want it all now!  (Insert sound of me stomping my feet and pouting)

How do you feel about china and dining rooms?  Do you dream of them as much as I do?

Yummy!

I made the most delicious chocolate tart last weekend!!  Everyone loved it.  The best part, it was incredibly easy to make!  I purchased a frozen pastry tart shell because I didn't have time to make it from scratch prior to leaving for my in-laws.  According to the comments section of this website, everyone found the tart shell to be very easy.  You just need to give yourself time for it to cool before putting the filling in it and cooking again.  Once the filling cooked I let it sit on the counter (and then in the car) for about an hour and a half.  Then I put it in the  refrigerator   for 2 hours before serving.

Below is the recipe by Tyler Florence from the Food Network.  I love all of his recipes.  He has a very easy way of cooking.  It's fun!  Check him out.

Ingredients
Tart Shell Pastry:
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
3 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small chunks
1 large egg, separated
2 tablespoons ice water, plus more if needed
Filling:
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup milk
10 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs, at room temperature
Directions
To make the pastry: combine the flour, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and mix with a pastry blender or hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the middle of the pastry. Combine the egg yolk with the ice water in a small bowl, whisking to blend; pour it into the well and work it in to bind the dough until it holds together without being too wet or sticky. Squeeze a small amount together, if it is crumbly, add more ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Form the dough into a disk and wrap in plastic; refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface into a 12-inch circle, about 1/4-inch thick. Carefully roll the dough up onto the pin (this may take a little practice) and lay it inside a 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom. Press the dough into the pan so it fits tightly; press the edges into the sides of the pan. It is important to press the dough evenly into every nook and corner of the ring, especially the scalloped edges. Shave off the excess hanging dough with a knife. Put the tart in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to relax.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Place the tart pan on a sturdy cookie sheet so it will be easy to move in and out of the oven. Line the tart with aluminum foil and add pie weights or dried beans to keep the sides of the tart from buckling. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and weights. Using a pastry brush, lightly coat the crust with a beaten egg white. Return to the oven and continue to bake for another 8 minutes until the tart is golden in color, but not brown. Remember the tart will be cooked again with the filling. It should be cooked but light in color so that it will not burn on the second bake. Set aside to cool and lower the oven temperature to 325 degrees F.
To make the filling: Heat the heavy cream and milk in a pot over medium-low flame, until it simmers slightly around the edges. Remove from the heat; add the chopped chocolate and stir until melted and smoothed out. Add the sugar and salt and whisk until well incorporated. Beat the eggs in a small bowl until blended and add them to the chocolate mixture, stir until completely blended. Pour the filling into the cooled tart shell and bake at 325 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes until the filling is set and the surface is glossy. If you see any bubbles or cracks forming on the surface, take the tart out right away - that means it is beginning to become over baked. Cool before cutting.
